Db-ff1 in Lottery: Donald Byrd - Free Form on Blue Note Records

Byrd is definitely among the most influential trumpet players. Born in 1932, he played with almost every »big name« in jazz during his career (Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane or Art Blakey). In the 60s he had his own quintet before he founded the legendary »Blackbyrds« in the 70s. Donald Byrd also studied composition in Paris, was an orchestral arranger and lectured at various universities in the US.

On »Free Form« Byrd had a very high calibre band with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Butch Warren and Billy Higgins. With producer Alfred Lion and the fantastic sound engineer Rudy van Gelder, Donald Byrd created wonderful pieces like »Pentacostal Feeling« or the wonderful »Night Flower«. We believe, »Free Form« is a good example of Donald Byrd’s virtuosity.

Good luck for the draw and talk to you soon.
