Cal Tjader (1925 - 1982) was an American vibraphonist and one of the most influential artists in Latin Jazz, without being of Latin American origin. At the beginning, Dave Brubeck supported his career and in the 1950s, Cal was among those musicians who brought the Mambo to the big American ballrooms. Cal Tjader played in various bands with Tito Puente, the great Stan Getz, Mongo Santamaria or Carmen McRae. He published his work on famous labels like “Fantasy“, “CTI Records” and “Verve“.
The CD “Soulful Vibes”, that we will give away this week, gives an overview of Cal’s “Verve” years between 1963 and 1967. Together with Chick Corea or Lalo Schifrin for example, you can listen to Cal Tjader’s tight band at their best. You will find everything from uptempo to ballads, that make you forget the grey wintertime. “Soulful Vibes” is a must for fans of Latin Jazz!
