In the year 2000 I worked in a big record store in Münster. At that time, I was in my early 20's, I slowly started to really get involved with jazz, funk and soul music. It were this music's amazing grooves, terrific basslines and – of course – the nonchalance and mellowness that caught me right from the beginning.
One day, when I was browsing through some cds, I got hold of a compilation called „I feel the earth move“. It was the German label's „Brown Sugar“ first record-release, compiled by music journalist (Jazzthetik) Michael Möhring.
Names like Gill Scott-Heron, George Benson and certainly Isaac Hayes were well known to me already. It meant I had to listen to this cd immediately. I was fascinated within seconds, but I had to stop listening after the first track by Boogaloo Joe Jones in order to go home and to listen to the whole compilation in peace. Thanks to this compilation, I got to know The Blackbyrds, Gary Bartz, Funk Inc and, most notably, Pleasure.
Few months later, Brown Sugar's second compilation with the title „Welcome to the Basement was released. Besides funk and jazz, this cd focused on the Latin-American influences.
Since this compilation I was absolutely sure that this was the kind of music I always had in mind and always wanted to listen to. The only thing I was not completely sure about was how and where to search for it.
In my opinion, the Brown Sugar series is perfectly suitable for freshmen as well as for long-time enthusiasts of funk and soul. Sometimes you even find long forgotten and rare favourites on these compilations. What you will definitely get is a wonderful introduction to the world of the original grooves.
Since the year 2000, Brown Sugar released eleven compilations on cd as well as on double-vinyl and an end is not in sight.
Since the early stages I have been a big fan and I am still looking forward to every new release.
